The findings indicate that a significant proportion of plaque specimens contained microplastic particles, ranging in size from 1-100 nanometers. These tiny plastic fragments were found embedded within the fibrous tissue and lipid deposits characteristic of atherosclerotic plaques. The presence of micro-nano-plastics has not been previously reported in this context, and the study's authors suggest that further research is needed to understand the mechanisms by which these particles accumulate in arterial plaque.
