To achieve this, the team analyzed atherosclerotic plaques removed from patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy procedures.

The analysis revealed the presence of microplastics and nanoparticles in the plaque samples, with sizes ranging from 0.1 to 100 micrometers. The researchers noted that these plastic particles were often found embedded within the lipid-rich core of the atherosclerotic plaques, suggesting a potential mechanism by which they contribute to arterial blockage. While the study's findings do not establish causality between plastic pollution and cardiovascular disease, they highlight an intriguing association worthy of further investigation.

The presence of microplastics and nanoparticles in human tissues has been previously documented, but this is one of the first studies to specifically investigate their role in atherosclerosis. Further research is needed to fully understand the implications of these findings and to determine whether plastic pollution contributes to the development or progression of cardiovascular disease.
